While it is true that Portsmouth is an amazing New England city to walk around, most of us arrive by car. The best public parking is at the Hanover Street Parking Garage. The Foundry Garage is a bit further, but costs less. A full map of Portsmouth Parking can be found here.
If you want the absolute closest parking to The Dog Art Gallery, the M&T Bank parking lot has a pay kiosk (325 State Street).
Street parking is always an option. Every spot downtown is metered using a kiosk or individual meter.
Note that all private lots in Portsmouth are more expensive than City-owned options.
Directions
We are in the lower level of the historic Customs House. It is the only enormous granite building in town - we are hard to miss!
You will find the building at the corner of Pleasant and State Street.
If you are local to Portsmouth, you might better understand our location as underneath Book and Bar, the amazing bookstore and lunch/bar eatery (yes, their patio is dog friendly!)
The entrance to our gallery is through the wrought iron gate, down our cobblestone outdoor path, and down our outdoor granite steps.
Here is a google map link that points exactly to the gate at the top of our walkway.
Still can't find us? We understand.
If you are standing at Pleasant and State Streets, and you are facing the giant gray granite building (the Customs House), look for the wrought iron fence. See that awesome curved gate? We are there! Just walk down the short cobblestone path and step down one flight of stairs - we are underneath the Customs House!
Note that you CANNOT reach our gallery by entering the main doors of the Custom House (near Five Thai). You can only enter through our OUTSIDE staircase that goes DOWN. If you took any steps UP - you aren't in the right place
